The City of Charleston’s original “suburb,” West Ashley, located west of the Ashley River, offers a mix of mid-century subdivisions graced with the character and solid construction of days gone-by, as well as newer developments further south down Highway 17 in the Bee’s Ferry and Shadowmoss areas.
The Crescent has stately brick homes with spacious moss-draped yards, some fronting the Intracoastal Waterway. Nearby are the classic ranch-style homes of Old Windemere, and Northbridge. Byrnes Downs’ timeless bungalows are ideal for starter homes or fans of the small house trend. The West Ashley Greenway, a 10-mile protected bicycle and pedestrian spine, connects neighborhoods to the restaurants, coffee shops and bars in the hip Avondale district. There’s also plenty of walking and exploring to do at Charles Towne Landing, a lovely waterfront state park commemorating South Carolina’s first English settlement.
