As with much of the Southeast, the main mode of transportation in the Charleston metro area is by personal vehicle, especially in the rural areas of the region. In urban areas of Charleston and in select parts of Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, James Island, and West Ashley, bicycling and walking are often good options as well.
The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) offers free shuttle buses around the peninsula. CARTA offers dedicated bus transit from downtown to Summerville and points North, bus service throughout Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, West Ashley and James Island, and shuttles to and from the airport.
